Heat butter and olive oil in a wide pan over medium heat until melted.
Add the sliced onions to the pan and stir to coat evenly.
Reduce the heat to low, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
Once the onions soften and begin to caramelize, add a splash of water to prevent burning and deglaze the pan.
Continue to cook, adding small amounts of water as needed, until the onions reach a deep golden-brown color.
Sprinkle with a pinch of salt, stir well, and remove from heat.
Let cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
