Instructions
Preparing the Meat Sauce
-
In a pan, start cooking the meat till its fully cooked to a brown color.
-
Remove the cooked meat from the pan, add the onion in its remaining fat (you can add oil if needed). Stir till it turns yellow in color and a little transparent.
-
Now return the cooked meat back into the pan with the onion and stir for 2 minutes.
-
Add the tomato paste, tomato juice, and enough water to cover the meat.
-
Add the salt, black pepper, thyme, basil, paprika & stock. Mix well.
-
Cover the pan, and let it simmer on low heat for 15 minutes till you get a vibrant red colored sauce.
Preparing the Bechamel Sauce
-
In a hot pan, add butter and let it melt, then add the flour and mix till the flour dissolves in the butter.
-
Next, add the milk gradually, till it combines with the butter and the flour. Lastly, to adjust the thickness of the sauce and make it thinner add water.
-
Add the salt, black pepper & the stock. Stir till you reach the desired consistency ( a bit thinner than regular bechamel)
Preparing the Cheese mix
-
In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, parmesan cheese (optional), thyme & basil.
-
To make the cheese creamier, add the milk and mix well till you reach the desired consistency.
-
Note: the bechamel sauce and the meat sauce is a bit thinner than usual, because the juiceness is required to cook the lasagna sheets.
Preparing the Lasagna
-
In a baking dish, add Olive oil, some bechamel & meat sauce.
-
Add a layer of the lasagna sheets (raw).
-
Spread half the amount of the cheese mix, then 1/3 of the quantity meat sauce & finally a layer of mozzarella cheese.
-
Now repeat the previous layer again. For the final top layer, add the lasagna sheets, the rest of the meat sauce, and the bechamel sauce.
-
Add some mozzarella on top. Grate some red cheddar on top to enhance the taste.
-
Now cover the baking dish with parchment paper then with aluminum foil.
-
Place it in a preheated oven on 180 degrees for 45 minutes.
-
Remove the foil & parchment paper, turn on the broiler & leave it till the top gets brown.
-
Let it cool for 15 minutes before cutting. Sprinkle some thyme on top and enjoy!
-
Note: you can use the lasagna sheets raw, or if you are worried that it won't get cooked well, then you can preboil it to be aldente.
