Ingredients

For the Syrup

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, add the semolina and the ground coconut. Mix together.
  2. In a pot, heat up (but don't boil) the ghee, milk and honey. Turn off the heat and add the sugar, stir until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add this mixture to the semolina, mix but not too much. Grease an oven tray with ghee, pour in the mixture, and tap the tray to make sure there are no air bubbles.
  4. Place in a preheated oven at 180 degrees until edges start to brown. Turn on the broiler and let it continue cooking until golden brown.
  5. While baking the basbousa, add water and sugar in a pot over heat, don't stir, when it starts to boil, add lemon juice and vanilla. Turn off the heat.
  6. When the basbousa is done, turn off your oven and take it out. Pour the syrup evenly and cover the basbousa immediately with foil. Return to the turned off oven until it absorbs the syrup and cools down.
